2011 Craftsman Tractors Exclusive: Turn Tight Technology!

!±8± 2011 Craftsman Tractors Exclusive: Turn Tight Technology!

A Zero-Turn For Every Homeowner And Every Yard!

Craftsman's new & exclusive Turn Tight Technology gives Craftsman tractors the tightest turning radius of any yard or garden tractor in the industry.  For 2011 Sears will beat the turning radius on ALL other brands of yard and garden tractors, even the Cub Cadet!  This new technology is close to the practical limits of all the residential zero-turn mowers on the market today at a much better price.

This exciting new technology can only be found at Sears.

I personally like that this new feature will be offered on not just the higher priced tractors, but will be available on models ranging from 99 to 99.  Almost everyone will be able to buy a tractor with Turn Tight Technology if you want.

Here are some of the things you should know about Turn Tight Technology.

Turn Tight Technology Definition:

Turn Tight enables a tractor to cut around small landscape objects.  The new steering has an industry leading 8 inch radius on 2011 Craftsman Yard and Garden tractors.

Turn Tight Technology Explained:

"Turn Tight utilizes an innovative steering system accomplished through a patent pending control system that allows the front wheels to increase their turning range without contacting the mower deck or tractor chassis.  With this technology, the wheels turn to match their corresponding radius, i.e. the inside wheel matches the inside radius and the out side wheel matches the outside radius of the turn." (This means the inside wheels have the same track and the outside wheels have the same track around an object.)

It is the tightest turning radius available on a non-zero turning tractor.  The turning radius on Craftsman Yard and Garden tractors now exceeds their closest competition by over 30%. (Craftsman's 30% improvement represents an 8" turning radius on a Craftsman YT vs. a comparable Cub Cadet with a 12" turning radius)

Here is a quick list of the turning radius for other tractors as posted on these manufacturer's websites for 2011:

2011 Craftsman Yard & Garden Tractors:  8 inch. 2011 Cub Cadet Series 1000: 12 inch. 2011 Snapper, Husqvarna, and Poulan Pro: 14 inch. 2011 Toro LX series: 15 inch. 2011 Ariens Lawn Tractors: 16 inch. 2011 Troy-Bilt: 18 inch. 2010 Simplicity Broadmore:  18 inch. 2011 John Deere 100 Series: 18 inch. (Yes, that's what they list on johndeere.com!)

Turn Tight Facts:

A tractor's turning radius is measured at the rear wheel when a tractor steering wheel is turned as far as possible while the tractor is moving. The smaller the radius, the easier it is to mow around obstacles and corners. 20 years ago 18 inches was considered quite good for a lawn, yard or garden tractor.

For the open areas, a tight turning radius allows you to quickly turn around and mow parallel to the last mowed swath in the opposite direction.  (If you are one of those people who likes a perfectly striped lawn this is a big advantage!) This is a big improvement from a tractor with a larger one.  The larger turning radius requires more time to turn around and many times you have to use reverse to get lined back up for the next parallel mowing path.

A tighter turning radius indicates a smaller turn.  As a result the tractor  is able to mow around smaller obstacles without having to back up.  This can save you a considerable amount of time when mowing a yard like mine with a lot of trees and landscape beds.  Since radius is 1/2 of a circles diameter, an 8" turning radius will allow you to completely mow around a 16" obstacle without backing up or making a second pass.

Tighter turning allows you to get around mowing obstacles like sheds, landscape beds and bird baths easier.  In many cases, you may not even need trim mower.

Electrical Vs Battery-Operated Lawn Mowers

!±8± Electrical Vs Battery-Operated Lawn Mowers

Most lawn mowers are powered by gasoline. Up until recently they have been the easiest mowers to use. It was necessary only to pull the starter cord a few times, or use the electric starter, and then mow to your heart's content. But gasoline-powered mowers are noisy and they do rather pollute the air with their emissions.

One of the knocks against the electric-powered lawnmower was that it was awkward to use. The mower must be plugged in via a long power cord, and care must be taken not to snarl or run over the power cord.

Now, you've got another choice - the battery-operated lawnmower. A battery-operated lawnmower will generally have enough power to allow the operator to mow both the front and back yards on one charge, unless they are extremely large.

It all depends on the battery, though. Some batteries last for thirty minutes between charges, others last up to an hour. The key thing is that they are rechargeable, so that there's no need to bury them in a garbage dump. Although...even these batteries only last about five years or so - and then must be recycled.

There are several types of batteries: alkaline - which are not used in lawn mowers, lead acid - which are gradually being replaced by nickel cadmium, and lithium batteries - which are not only expensive but also have low storage capacity.

Nickel cadmium batteries

If you are buying a new battery operated lawn mower, make sure you get one powered by a nickel cadmium (Ni-cad) battery. They are simply better than the lead acid - they can be recycled and are environmentally friendly.

Extending battery life

As with any other type of mower, there are times when you should mow your lawn and times when you shouldn't. You should never try to mow wet grass - it produces a tremendous strain on the battery - or engine - and doesn't do your grass much good, either. Don't let your grass grow such that you're cutting off more than three inches at a time - again, bad for the engine or battery, and bad for the grass itself.

Ni-Cad batteries

Ni-Cad batteries are maintenance free. All you need to do is make sure you do not re-charge the batteries until they are completely discharged. The batteries have a 'memory' - if you recharge them when they don't need to be, they will remember the energy state they were at when they were recharged, and will believe themselves to be run down the next time they reach that state - even though they have plenty of power left. (Okay, there's a bit of anthropomorphism there, but you get the idea.)

If you're concerned about the environment - and we all should be - the battery-operated or electrical lawn mowers should be our choice.

Cordless / Battery Powered Electric Snowblower

For more information about this device and continued updates, please see my blog at: electronicrevolt.com Snow Joe electric snowblower converted to run on 25s2p lipo cells (105V max 93V nominal, 10Ah) I found this at a local thrift store, unused for and couldn't resist. It uses a "universal" motor so very little was actually required to actually get this running other than wiring up a custom battery harness.I know it's excessive, but make sure to watch in high def 1080p! Averages between 5 - 12A, around 16A peak. This gives about 1-11 hours of runtime depending on snow depth and pack. I didn't think to make the video until after the driveway and sidewalk were finished so I thought I would clear a spot in the backyard for my four-legged friend (I don't always snowblow our entire lawn). The base layer had been melted and refrozen a couple times so it was very solid - no problem for a high-torque electric! The entire thing weighs about 30lbs - very maneuverable and easy to lift in/out of vehicles, up/down steps, etc. There are lots of other benefits as well - no starting, no gas, no oil, uses only a few cents of electricity per use. This is the battery that I put together for use on an 8kW max electric mountainbike that goes 55mph when everything isn't covered in snow - expect a vdeo of that as soon as summer arrives. In the video it is inside of a rack-mount bike bag and then wrapped in a garbage bag for waterproofing. I considered putting the battery inside the housing ...

Walk Behind Leaf Blowers

!±8± Walk Behind Leaf Blowers

There are typically two types of leaf blowers, walk behind lead blowers and those which you can strap on to your back. While there are advantages and disadvantages to both of these types of blowers, you should be familiarized with both of them so you can make an educated decision regarding which you will choose. This article will give you all of the information you will need to make this choice so you can purchase and use a leaf blower that will get the job done quickly and effectively.

Walk behind leaf blowers can sometimes get heavy and you don't want to have to hold them all day while you are out in the yard blowing leaves, however they can be very efficient at what they do. This type of blower is made by a variety of companies, so it's important that if you want one you know which company is the best to buy from. While there are many different companies out there that you can buy from, you will want to make sure that the one you do give your money to is trustworthy and has a good solid reputation for making quality products like the one you plan on buying.

You can also get a leaf blower that is strapped on to your back. This is better for people who don't want to hold it the entire time in their hands and it can be very convenient, however they tend to be a little more expensive than their walk behind counterpart. If you are willing to spend the extra money, it's a handy piece of equipment to have around the house for that time of the year when all the leaves fall and you have to get your yard work done as quickly as possible.

Choosing walk behind leaf blowers over the kind you have on your back is a good idea, but only if that is truly what you want. One of the most important things in deciding which kind to buy is what you want. The difference between them is not so much measured in quality, but rather the preference of the user. The last thing you want to do is end up wasting time and money on a piece of equipment that will let you down consistently and ultimately break down after a short period of time. Consider buying a leaf blower an investment, one that should be selected carefully and bought with a budget in mind. You can get a good quality leaf blower while still not spending a lot of money.
